SUMMARY:Shark Tales: A Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:AWSC is excited to offer a monthly lecture series\, "Shark Tales: A Lecture Series"\, this winter at the Shark Center Chatham. Join us in person on January 26th\, February 23rd\, and March 23rd to hear from marine scientists about their research and how it relates to our local ecosystem and conservation. Guests will also have time during the evening to explore the Shark Center exhibits and learn about the natural history of white sharks in this area\, the ongoing white shark research\, and their role in the marine ecosystem.\n\nDuring this time\, guests will also take in our special exhibit\, "From Red to Green: Understanding the IUCN Red List\," which explores what the Red List is\, how species are categorized\, and what can be done to protect them\, all through the lens of native Cape Cod species.\n\n\n\nAWSC is excited to welcome Dr. Andrea Bogomolni to speak about her work with the seal population on Cape Cod. Dr. Andrea Bogomolni (Dr. Dre) is a community scientist as well as many other "-ists": a naturalist\, artist\, biologist\, and conservationist with a passion for the ocean. Working with a range of collaborators from scientists\, to fishermen and to artists\, she aims to understand not just seals\, but our human relationship with the natural world and ways we can help preserve\, protect and sustainably make use of the limited resources the ocean provides. She has an interdisciplinary skill-set in scientific research\, education\, and outreach. Now more than ever\, there is a need to understand the important role seals play in our ecosystem and understand their role as sentinel species. Through collaborative research and engagement\, much is being learned across the region. Andrea will be sharing insights about their place in the greater ecosystem and what seals are telling us about our complex relationship with the natural world.\n\n\n\nThis is a family-friendly event. However\, our 21+ guests will enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or beer with the price of admission. A cash bar will be available during the event.\n\n\n\nRegarding Covid-19: We are capping this event at 20 people to allow for social distancing in the exhibit hall and during the lecture. When not enjoying complimentary beverages\, we will be requiring attendees to wear masks per the Town of Chatham Board of Health Mandate.\n\n\n\nAdditionally\, the lecture discussion will be available to stream for free at home via Zoom. A link to register to join us virtually can be found at the link below.\n\n \nReserve your spot for the event in-person or online here.
