Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra presents a Woodwind Quintet Program
This vibrant program for woodwind quintet brings together three distinctive composers whose works showcase the expressive range, color, and rhythmic vitality of the ensemble.
Summer Music by Samuel Barber is a lush and evocative work written in 1956. True to its title, the piece unfolds in warm, expansive phrases that shimmer with pastoral lyricism and subtle harmonic color. Barber’s writing highlights the individuality of each instrument while weaving them into a rich, impressionistic tapestry—by turns introspective, playful, and radiant.
Aires Tropicales by Paquito D'Rivera infuses the program with irresistible rhythmic energy. Drawing on Cuban and Caribbean dance traditions, D’Rivera blends classical craft with jazz-inflected harmonies and syncopated drive. Each movement bursts with character—from playful wit to sultry lyricism—offering the quintet an opportunity to explore vibrant colors and virtuosic flair.
The Miniatures by William Grant Still are concise character pieces rich in charm and individuality. Still’s distinctive voice—deeply rooted in American musical traditions—shines through in music that is both elegant and expressive. Each miniature offers a finely etched mood, revealing the warmth, clarity, and expressive nuance of the woodwind ensemble.
