Chatham Marconi Welcomes Mr. Robert McMaster to its Speaker Series
The year 2024 marks an important milestone in the history of Cape Cod and the Islands. Exactly two hundred years ago the geological history of the region first came to the attention of scientists around the world with the publication of a landmark paper on the geology of Martha's Vineyard by renowned geologist Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864). Hitchcock’s insights into the island’s past sparked a revolution in our understanding of the forces that shaped the Vineyard, Cape Cod, and North America, eventually leading him to embrace the theory of continental glaciation, the first American scientist to do so publicly. Biographer Robert T. McMaster presents this lively, engaging talk on the central role the Cape and Islands played in the development of Hitchcock's thinking. The talk will be accompanied by some intriguing and amusing entries from Hitchcock’s field notes as well as images of Cape Cod past and present.
