Chatham Marconi Welcomes Mr. Carl Herzog, PhD to its Speaker Series
From her launch in 1797 to her ongoing service as the Navy's oldest commissioned warship, USS Constitution has not only survived the long centuries, but continually contributed to the nation in ways far beyond its original mission. Though renowned for its victories over the Royal Navy in the War of 1812, Constitution’s voyages and missions spanned the globe throughout the 19th century representing diverse U.S. interests in the farthest ports before radio communication. About Our Speaker
Since 2017, CARL HERZOG has been the Public Historian for the USS Constitution Museum, where he conducts original research on the history of the ship, designs public programming and teaches maritime history to the active-duty US Navy crew of USS Constitution. A resident of Falmouth, he holds a PhD in history from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst, where he specialized in colonial smuggling operations in the Caribbean during the decades leading up to the American Revolution. For 20 years before joining the museum, Carl taught navigation, seamanship and maritime history for education programs on board a variety of schooners and square-rigged sailing ships. When he wasn't at sea, he served for eight years as editor-in-chief of a series of annual marine navigation handbooks. He holds a 500-ton ocean master's license from the United States Coast Guard and has spent about 50,000 miles under sail in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Caribbean
About Chatham Marconi Maritime Center
Founded in 2002, the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to preserve and celebrate the history of Chatham Radio/WCC and 20th Century maritime communication through interpretive museum exhibits, educational programs and community engagement. The Center comprises the historic Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum, an Education Center offering in-house education in communications science and technology for grades K - 9, and the Chatham Marconi TechSmart education outreach initiative designed to bring its proven wireless technology curricula directly to 4th grade children in Cape Cod classrooms. About the Chatham Marconi Speaker Series
Programs are usually presented on the first Thursday of each month from September through June, and on alternate Thursday evenings during the Summer. Subjects are drawn from the resources of the Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum, the Center's Education programs, or member-suggested topics related to our mission.
